Q. What is Freewire Telephone and how does it work?
A. Freewire Telephone is what’s known as a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service. Instead of going down a normal phone line, your calls go through your University network or broadband connection. You get a clearer, crisper sound quality and, more importantly, you can talk for a lot less, and even for nothing.
Q. Why can’t I make calls through the 0844 546 0000 number?
A. Unfortunately, some local phone networks don’t let you use the 0844 number, especially outside the UK. If your friends and family want to call you from overseas, they can use an alternative number instead: +44 207 983 9388.
Q. Are calls with Freewire really free?
A. They are when they’re made from one Freewire user to another. Audio calls, video calls, round the corner or round the world… if there’s a Freewire phone on the other end, you don’t pay a penny.
The only calls you pay for are those to other landline or mobile networks, and even then we’ve made sure the rates are among the lowest around.
Anyone on a Freewire enabled network can download the Freewire Telephone software for nothing. So if your friends and family sign up, you may never need to pay for another phone call again!
Q. What do I need to start using Freewire Telephone?
A. You simply need a PC or Mac and a connection to your University’s high-speed network or a home broadband link. Just download the Freewire Telephone software and you’re ready to go.
You can hear and talk through your computer's built-in speakers and microphone or, if you like the feel of traditional telephone, you can buy a USB telephone that plugs straight into your PC.
Q. Can my friends call me on my PC from a "normal" phone?
A. Yes, as long as your computer is on and you’re logged into Freewire. All they have to do is need to dial 0844 546 0000 and enter your eleven-digit Freewire ID when prompted.
Q. I want to change my account details. What do I do?
A. Simple. Just visit My Account and enter your Username and Password (or Freewire ID and PIN) to log in. You can view and edit your account details in the My Profile section.
